Michael Horst Schirmer of Boerne, Kendall County, Texas was born on April 7, 1946, and died at age 65 years old on June 6, 2011.

Leroy was born in St. Mary's Hospital, Galveston, TX to Idabelle Nettie Biehler & Louis Frederick Schirmer. When Leroy was a baby he had asthma so bad they did not expect him to live. He struggled with asthma off and on throughout his life. He was baptized into the Lutheran church in Galveston in 1917. He grew up in Galveston, Texas and graduated from Ball High School. In high school he played in the clarinet and drums in the band. As an adult he graduated from Valley college in San Bernardino, CA. After high school Leroy worked at the Sherwin Williams Paint Store in Galveston. He met Ernestine Schirmer in High School and started dating. Leroy was drafted Feb. 14, 1941. He married Ernestine Schirmer Sept. 9, 1941 in Lake Charles, LA. He was deployed as a member of the 36th "Texas" Infantry Division known as the "T" Patch. He fought valiantly and has many medals. He never spoke of the war or the atrocities he saw. He served in Morocco, Italy, Salerno, France and Germany. He helped liberate Nazi concentration camps. He arrived home to Galveston August 11, 1945. His wife at that time was raising her sister age 6 and he took over as father to her. In 1947 his daughter Phyllis Ann was born - 3 years later another daughter Patsy arrived. Leroy was employed as a clerk for the Santa Fe Railroad in Galveston. He was a member of the First Methodist Church. He was a mason and belonged to Tucker Lodge #294 Afam in Galveston. He was also a member of El Mina Shrine Temple and played in their drum and bugle corp and a member of the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple. In 1957 he was promoted and transferred by the Santa Fe to Temple, Texas. Leroy, Ernestine and his 3 girls were very homesick for Galveston, but made many friends in Temple and enjoyed their time there. In Temple Leroy belonged to the First Methodist Church and served as an usher there almost every Sunday. Although he kept his membership at Tucker Lodge in Galveston, Leroy attended masonic meetings in Temple at King Solomons Masonic Lodge #1427. In 1964 Leroy was promoted again and transferred to San Bernardino, CA. This was a very hard move for the family. The two older girls (his sister-in-law and Phyllis) stayed behind in Temple. So everyone was saddened and returned to Texas even for long weekends. California was exciting and new. Leroy took up golf and that became one of his favorite activities. He loved to garden and had lovely spaces he planted in. In San Bernardino he attended St. Paul United Methodist Church, joined Al Malaikah Shrine Temple & the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple. When Leroy retired he was Supt. of the Santa Fe shops in San Bernardino, CA. After his retirement he traveled, played golf, and loved to go to Las Vegas. Leroy was 6ft 1 inch tall - light complexion - brown hair, brown eyes - later when his hair was gray - they referred to him as the silver fox.
