Snider Family History & Genealogy

I have an old studio photograph identified as Amanda SNIDER who was the mother of Fred, Addie, and Dora. The photograph was taken at the Potter Studio in Mansfield, OH and appears to have been taken in the 1870's with Amanda likely in her teens at the time it was taken. I believe that this is a photograph of Amanda Jane BURNS SNYDER and have been able to gather the following information regarding Amanda and her family:

Amanda Jane BURNS was b. 15 or 16 Oct 1863 in Ohio to parents Jacob BURNS (1831-1920) and Mary WHISLER (1839-1898) who were married 9 Feb 1860 in Ashland Co., OH. Amanda was one of 7 children born to this couple including William C.; Amanda Jane; Daniel Robert; Mary C.; Samuel Edward; Martha J. or G.; and Byron BURNS, all born between 1862 and 1877. Amanda married William “Bill” Curtis SNIDER (1863-1953) on 22 Oct 1885 in Mifflin, OH and they had 7 children including Henry “Harry” Jacob; Myrtle; Christiana or Christina; Walter; William Frederick “Fred”; Adda “Addie” Jane; and Dora Amanda SNIDER, all born between 1886 and 1897. Amanda died 12 Nov 1897 in Richland or Ashland Co., OH and is buried in the Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Ashland, OH.

Studio portrait of Lester J. Snider, taken June 25, 1903 at eight years of age. Lester was born June 25, 1895 in Kansas and died June 12, 1962 in Yamhill, Oregon. He spent most of his life in Oregon.

A picture of me, Juanita Ellen Snider Sutphin, at Lakeside Amusement Park which used to be in Salem, Virginia. We always went there as children. People came from all over the place to visit the park. WE sure miss it.

He married THERESSA JANE GASTON5 30 Jan 1866, daughter of DAVID GASTON and MARY TOOMEY. She was born 08 Nov 1843 in Monroe County, Tennessee, and died 25 Mar 1913 in Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee.

George Daniel fought for the Union. He didn't tell Theressa until he was on his
Deathbed. Military service: Bet. 18 Sep 1863 - 11 Sep 1866, Company G, 9th Regiment of Tennessee Cavalry Volunteers1 2 He asked to be interred in the National Cemetery in Hamilton County,Chattanooga. Thus the reason they are buried in separate cemeteries. George is buried in the National Cemetery, Chattanooga, TN.

In 1880 they lived in Reavine, Walker, Georgia.
According to the will of George Snider (born January 01, 1769) , George Dannel inherited his gf (George Snider's) plantation.

Viola Belle Nichols (GRIFFITH, CHRISTOPHER C., GILBERT, BASDELL, GRIFFIN, HENRY) was born July 16, 1867 in Shady Grove, Hickman, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Griffith Nichols (1843-1899) and Malinda Alice Savage (1848-1931). Viola died November 23, 1940 in Alhambra, Los Angeles, California. Viola married CHARLES WESLEY SNIDER January 27, 1886 in Emminence, Shannon, Missouri, son of JAMES SNIDER and TERRESSA NEAL. He was born September 08, 1867 in Lowassie, Missouri, and died August 26, 1909 in Ordway, Otero, Colorado.

Gertrude died March 15, 1968 in Riverside, California. She married ROBERT GRIFFEE SNIDER July 03, 1918 in Tacoma, Pierce, Washinigton, son of CHARLES SNIDER and VIOLA NICHOLS. He was born February 19, 1887 in Lowassie, Missouri, and died January 31, 1968 in Riverside, California.

IDA FLORENCE SNIDER (CHARLE WESLEY, JAMES, JOHN WALKER, GEORGE, JOHANN GEORGE SCHNEIDER) was born February 15, 1900, daughter of Charles Wesley Snider and Viola Belle Snider. She died Abt. 1970. She married 1st CHARLES BROWN. She married 2nd WARRICK MCQUEEN.

From left to right in the photo are Mattie Smith Stratton, Eli Frank Snider, and Dora Velma Smith. The picture was taken about one year before Eli Frank Snider and Dora Velma Smith were married.

ELI FRANK SNIDER was born November 22, 1884 in Shannon Co, MO, and died July 21, 1970 in Poplar Bluff, Butler, MO. He was the 11th child of James Snider and Teresa Neal Snider. Eli Frank Snider married DORA VELMA SMITH November 29, 1906 in Ellsinore, MO. Dora Velma Smith was born February 21, 1888 in Hunter, Carter, Missouri, and died April 01, 1965 in Saint Louis, Missouri.

JAMES SNIDER (JOHN WALKER3, GEORGE2, JOHANN GEORGe SCHNEIDER) was born May 08, 1830 in Tennessee, and died September 07, 1895 Low Wassie, Shannon County, Missouri. He was the son of John Walker Snider (b. 1798 in Blount County TN, d. 1827 in Carter County, MO) and Nancy Henderson (b. 1798 in NC, d. abt 1872 in Carter County, MO). James Snider married REBECCA MONTGOMERY August 02, 1855 in Oregon City, MO. She was died Bet. 1860 - 1865 in MO. James W. Snider's first wife was said to have died while James away in the Civil War. He returned from the war to find that she was gone. Family members were said to have nursed him back to health and this included his first cousin Teresa Neal, his first cousin. They became fond and each other and he married TERRESSA (Treasy, Creasy) NEAL (NEEL) February 23, 1865 in Carter Co., MO. Teresa was the daughter of ROBERT NEAL and NANCY HENDERSON. Teresa was born November 27, 1844 in Missouri, and died November 04, 1888 in Shannon County, Missouri.
Family legend has it that James sided with the Confederacy didn’t like his daughter Sally's father-in-law, John C. Windes. They had fought on different sides of the Civil War. The Union man got a pension (in his old age), but the Confederate didn't. They got into a fight over it once at the post office when a check came through.
