My mother told us some pretty interesting stories about her dad. It seems he led a very interesting life. I'll try to tell some of his stories here. His parents moved to a nice clearing with lots of berries beside a river. I think that is now known as Chehalis, Washington. It turned out that they had settled on the annual camping ground of an Indian tribe (probably Chehalis), where they came to pick berries, and to fish for salmon. My Grandfather was born and raised there. At one point, his mother asked his father why he let him play with "those nasty old Indians" His dad answered by saying, "He can out run, out fight, and out ride any one of those Indian boys. You leave him be." He was earning a mans wages as a cowhand when he was a young teenager, where he picked up the habit of gambling. He was in a saloon playing poker once, when someone was accused of cheating. Guns were drawn, and shots fired, but my grandfather wasn't injured. The saloon keeper told him that the other guy was asking to be shot, and this wasn't the first time. He was also told to go out back, get on the saloon keeper's horse and ride. Apparently, The man he had shot was well to do, and well connected. Many years later my grandfather went back to the saloon, and was told by the same keeper to just keep on riding. He never did find out if the man he shot had died or not. After shooting the man, he went to work on a dam handling mules and horses, which were more valuable than a mans life, if said man was not white. A horse fell down the side of the dam with his negro rider. The man died immediately, and the horse had to be put down. There was grief over loosing such a good horse, but none over the man. Different times, different mores. At a certain point while working on the dam, some Pinkerton types came looking for Lester Miller, probably about the shooting. He was such a valued worker that the supervisor told them he didn't have anyone by that name working for him. I may be a bit confused whether this story is about my grandfather, or about his father, but I think it was him. I am also not sure what other events in his life this came before or after. At some point he was a hunting guide for Theodore Roosevelt. On a different hunting trip, Roosevelt ran into him in town while he was getting supplies. He was asked to accompany Roosevelt as a guest, because he had already employed another guide. Unfortunately, due to family obligations, he was not able to go. He held many jobs in his lifetime. He was in the Army as a Mule Skinner. He was a supervisor on a cotton plantation, I think in Sinton, Texas where my mother was born. He helped build roads from El Paso to Fort Worth, and I believe other parts of Texas as well. He was a farmer. He was a Nurse at (I think) a county mental hospital. He liked to watch wrestling on TV. He died of emphysema from smoking too much.
