William Robert Wood was born on February 11, 1961 at Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph, Michigan United States. Family, friend, or fan, this family history biography is for you to remember William Robert Wood.

William was born between 1730 and 1752 possibly in Halifax (or Lunenburg) County, Virginia. His wife is unknown. They had at least one child.
I first learned of the existence of this William Wood by the fact that his son was mentioned as “William Wood Jur.” in the will of John Salmon. Furthermore, this information gives evidence to the location of William Wood in Halifax County. Also, this county was created from Lunenburg County in 1752; therefore, any activity occurring prior to that date had occurred in Lunenburg County.
The birth date given for this William Wood – 1769 – disagrees with the 1850 US census taken August 16 in Campbell County, Georgia, which indicates a “Wm Wood” at 80 years old, and his wife “Jane Wood” at 70 years old. This places the birth year of William J. Wood at about 1770. Therefore, the birth year of his father would roughly be between 1730 and 1752; lacking source documentation, I am led to question the birth date of 1769.

William was born on October 9, 1836 in Georgia. He joined the M. E. Church, South, in about 1859. He married Margaret Smith McMichael on January 1, 1861. William became a corporal in the Civil War, serving in Company G of the Union 1st Alabama Cavalry, U. S. Volunteers. They moved from Cherokee County, Alabama to Boone County, Arkansas in about 1872. He died of dropsy May 30, 1875. Margaret was born November 19, 1840 in Cherokee County, Alabama. She was entitled to a pension. She died July 17, 1918. They had 5 known children.
It is interesting to note that the Civil War broke out just months after William B. and Margaret were married. My personal record indicates William and Margaret were married on January 1st, 1861 (no indication as to where), and that William B. Wood became a corporal in the Civil War, serving in the “Leo G.1 Regiment, Alabama Volunteer Lav.”. William B. Wood was in Alabama during the 1860 US census; he therefore likely trained and served in an Alabama regiment. However, did he serve for the Confederate Army, or for the Union Army? Both Alabama and Tennessee had Union as well as Confederate regiments. Known as Southern Unionists, Alabama had 3,000 white soldiers serving in the Union Army while Tennessee had 42,000 serving the Union Army.
Let’s first consider the most likely scenario in which William B. and Margaret Wood are Unionists who opt to stay in Alabama. The Alabama Unionists largely centered in the Appalachian Highlands in the northern part of that State (note that Cherokee County is in northern Alabama). Generally, slavery was not popular among free men who tilled the soil. Relatively poor mountain farmers saw no need to die so that wealthy plantation owners could keep their slaves. Delegates convened in Montgomery, Alabama in 1861 to debate secession from the Union. Three delegates, among them Henry C. Sanford of Cherokee County, never signed the ordinance and maintained their Unionism throughout the war. There was a William B. Wood who volunteered as a private and ended up a corporal in Company G of the Union 1st Regiment of the Alabama Cavalry. This description appears to match my personal record, “G.1 Regiment”, “Alabama”, and “Volunteer”. Furthermore, my personal records indicate that Margaret received a pension entitled to her by the Act of June 27, 1890. The pension, paid by the United States Pension Agent of Knoxville, Tennessee, was $8.00 per month from July 14, 1890 on, along with an additional $2.00 per month for children under 16 years of age living with her. According to the Oxford Dictionary of the US Military, the intent of the Dependent Pension Act of 1890 was to provide a pension for any Civil War veteran of the Union Army, created in response to political pressure from Union veterans, many of whom were members of the Grand Army of the Republic. It also provided a pension to a soldier’s widow under certain conditions.
A second scenario would be as follows: If they were Unionists, they may not have remained in Alabama, considering the treatment of persons not in favor of the State’s separation from the Union. If William B. and Margaret Wood decided to leave Alabama before or during the war, then William may have joined a Union regiment in Tennessee. This scenario, however, is not likely because they lived in northern Alabama, which was generally in favor of the Union. There was therefore little incentive to move to Tennessee before or during the war. The State of Tennessee was split between the Unionists in the eastern portion and the Separatists in the western portion. Henry County in Tennessee, to which William B. and Margaret Wood eventually relocated, is located in the northwestern portion of that State. If they were Unionists, this is not a destination to consider for relocation before or during the war.
A third scenario would be that William B. Wood was a Confederate soldier, in which case, he would have served in an Alabama regiment (residency in agreement with my personal records and consistent with the 1860 US census). There was a William B. Wood who served as a Colonel in the Confederate 16th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Company F & S.4 There was also a William B. Wood who volunteered as a Sergeant in the Confederate 55th Regiment, Company B.5 However, this scenario is not likely because northern Alabama was generally pro Union, and Margaret received a pension for his service to the Union.
I therefore consider it conclusive that William B. Wood served in a Unionist Regiment in Alabama, one of only 3,000 who chose to do so. In any case, it would appear that William B. and Margaret Wood married in Alabama, and then moved to Tennessee after the Civil War ended in 1865 (they moved between 1869 and 1870). The distance from Cherokee County Alabama to Henry County Tennessee is about 300 miles by the most favored route.
