Avis Winona (Brown) Myers was born as Avis Lynn LaPointe on September 19, 1974 on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. Her birth parents were Weldon Stanley LaPointe and Donna Long Wolf. Avis was full blooded Lakota, and was born with a rare condition called osteogenesis imperfecta, a brittle bone disorder. She was later adopted by David and Lynelle Brown and would have three siblings, Johanna (born 1977), Benjamin (born 1978) and Brian (born 1979). She would grow up in Custer, South Dakota, graduating high school in 1993. As a child she would undergo numerous surgeries as a result of her OI and many fractures she suffered as a consequence of that disorder. She had most of these at Shriners Hospital, which she credited with helping her immensely. Avis met Edward "Teddy" Myers in the summer of 1999 and they became great friends then; they would begin dating in June 2001 after Teddy moved to South Dakota. Following a move to Maine to be with family there, Avis and Teddy were married on September 25, 2003. Avis was known for many things, like her great sense of humor and infectious laugh; her upbeat and positive outlook on life; her dedication to family especially her young nieces and nephews; her love of coffee and Coca-Cola collectibles; her strong spirituality as a pagan; her passion for crafts like quilting, crocheting and knitting; her wonderful cooking, and much more. Avis had numerous health challenges throughout her life, from rodding surgeries to a neck fusion as a young girl, and a couple of serious accidents. She fought gamely for all of her 35 years. Eventually her struggles came to an end when she passed away at 3:04 am on Monday, March 29, 2010 in Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, Maine. Avis would leave behind her husband Teddy, her mother and siblings, uncles and aunts, many cousins, her nieces and nephews that she doted on as "Auntie", numerous friends, and her pets that were her babies, Winnie the cockatiel and Chica Rose the Chihuahua. She was predeceased by her father David Arthur Brown in 2006, and by her birth parents. This obituary was written on October 28, 2020 by Teddy Myers. She was one of a kind and touched many lives in her time here with us.
