  • Introduction

    Detra Gates was a special woman to me. I met her in a little church in Denver, Colorado in 1982. From the moment I met her, I loved her. I told her she reminded me of my grandmother and that I wanted to adopt her. She threw open her arms and said, "Honey, I'm all yours!" I was a brand new Christian and she and her husband Calep taught me how not to just read Scripture, but to study it with the Strong's Concordance. That was one of the most important lessons I could have ever learned. Detra was named after the book of Deuteronomy and Calep was the son of a slave that taught himself to read by reading Scripture. He meant to name him Caleb after the man written about in Exodus. I have always loved their name origin stories. They were both in their 80s and I was in my 20s when I met and studied with them. I am so thankful for them. I wish I had a photo of them together. They were very special to me.

Detra Gates is holding my baby son, Ryan. est early 1985. What a joy it was to find this photo!
I believe the young man in the photo on the wall to the right was her nephew.

Calep and Detra Gates had no children, but they did have a nephew. I have no idea if it was hers or his. If you have any information, I would love to hear about their lives. She did tell me about horseback riding as a young woman.
