Duane Edwin Collier was born on April 8, 1925, in Ladysmith, Rusk, Wisconsin, USA. His parents, Percy Edwin Collier (1902-1983) and Myrtle China Collier (1905-1991), raised him alongside his four siblings. Duane was the second youngest in the family, with siblings named Vergie Lee, Eugene M, and Vernon C Collier. At the age of 18, on April 9, 1943, Duane registered for the draft in Rusk, Wisconsin. During that time, he was working at Corner Hardware in Ladysmith. In January 1944, at the age of 19, Duane enlisted in the United States Air Force. He received the service number 36 839 096 and was assigned to the Headquarters Company of the 753rd Tank Battalion. Throughout his military service, Duane actively participated in World War II. He served in the European Theatre of Operations and took part in significant campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy Invasion. After years of dedicated service, Duane was honorably discharged from the military on January 21, 1946. His commitment and contributions as a member of the 90th Infantry and the Air Force in the European Theatre of Operations reflect his bravery and dedication to his country. Returning to civilian life, Duane married Margaret Ypma (1928-2003) on December 16, 1950, in Rusk, Wisconsin. Following his discharge from the military, he found employment at the Paper Mill in Ladysmith for five years. At the time of his death, Duane was employed at the Northern Wisconsin Colony and Training School as an Institutional Aid. Duane Edwin Collier's life, both in military service and civilian endeavors, demonstrates his enduring commitment to his family, community, and country.
