According to the 1940 census, answered by Jack's father, Jack's father was AJ Gulledge age 29, his mother was Mittie (Penrod) Gulledge age 25, and there were 2 sons living in the household, Joe age 4 and Jack age 2. Everyone in the house was born in Texas and they were living on a farm in Ellis TX. AJ was a farmer. The farm was rented and both parents had attended high school.
AJ and Mittie also had a daughter, Mittie Jane Gulledge Burns. Mittie lived to the age of 97, 1915-2013.
