  • Introduction

Kathleen Margaret Sproules was one of 11 children of Mary Bridget Jenkins and Denis Sproules of 'Sunnyside', Eurack in Victoria. She was married at 19 years to Nicholas Foley aged 25. They were married at St Michael's in Beeac in Victoria and thereafter settled on their new farm, 'Burn Brae', Corrunan Vic near Colac where they raised their 9 children. 'Mama' was an amazing cook, proud housewife and avid gardener. She made meals grown on the farm and from her kitchen garden. She had great love for her animals and when Pop first saw her he said " I saw a good looking young dame on a blue pony and I decided I wanted to marry her". She travelled widely with her daughter Ann and husband James Leahy in the 1950's. They moved from Perth to the Northern Territory to Aboriginal settlements at Papunya and Areyonga where Jim and Ann both Teachers taught the Aboriginal children. She introduced both scone and toffee making to the children there and she met famous Artist, Albert Namatjira who was exiled to Papunya from Hermansburg due to a legal matter. She would take her young grandson, John Leahy to visit Albert in his hut along with her famous scones and tea! Albert also would come to the door to say hello. She saw that he fretted for his own community and it was not a happy time for him at Papunya. Mama loved a chat and was very engaging with her family, friends and neighbours. She had a very special affinity with animals and was incredibly kind to them. This trait lives on in her family. She passed away at Marshall near Geelong in 1999 aged 102 and 7 months.
