Nicholas Foley's History: 1890 - 1976

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Nicholas was often called Mick. He was an intelligent gentle man who worked incredibly hard as a Farmer/Market Gardener at Corrunan Road, Corrunan. He was well loved in his community and had a strong connection to his large family network. His parents farmed nearby at Nalangil Road having moved from Tower Hill near Warrnambool. Pop married Kathleen Sproules in 1916. She was born in Bushfield Vic. They moved into a brand new farmhouse, 'Burn Brae' on approx 56 acres where they raised their 9 children. Pop was an amazing horseman and had very loyal and loved Draughthorses which worked their land. He had a gentle way with both people and animals. Sadly the house burned down in 1938, Kathleen - (Mama) was home with the 4 youngest of the children, Ann, Vincent, Peter and Helen. All were unhurt but the family lost their beautiful home. They moved to their Foley grandparents farm on Nalangil Road nearby for several years before renting a house belonging to Hennigans family which backed onto Burn Brae. Nicholas and Kathleen continued to farm their land on Corrunan Rd until it was sold around 1948. They had great friends and neighbours, Gleesons, Harringtons, Alan Burns, Hennigans, Masons, Monaghans and the Dunns. Their cousins' were Jim Finnegan, Dinny and Jimmy Watson, Paddy Finnegan. Nicholas was a protagonist and along with other locals set up the first Onion pool in the Depression days of the 1930's. This was to pool their resources for fairer pricing of onion crops between WW1and WW2 Wars. Eventually the 'Onion Wars' broke out with until an Onion a Marketing Board was established to oversea the industry. They moved to Ash's Road, Leopold to a smaller farm with a beautiful 7 room farmhouse with lovely gardens. They retired to 105 Swanston St Geelong in the 1950's, thereafter to Corio and and lastly to 12 Breakwater Rd East Geelong. They also spent a couple of years in the mid 1970's with their daughter Ann and grandchildren, John, Susan and Lizzy at 44 The Avenue, Ferntree Gully. Pop never took to life in the city, they enjoyed life in FT Gully, running chickens and hand raising calves. Nicholas had poor health in the 1960's and 1970's. He lost an eye and battled with pneumonia and dermatitis, most likely due to effects of chemicals used in market gardening. He never complained. He died in 1976 in Geelong and was remembered as an amazing husband of 60 years to Kathleen (Kit or Kitty) and father to his 9 children and 27 grandchildren and 60 + great grandchildren.
