Richard Darwin Groninger
Richard Darwin Groninger was born on March 23, 1928 in Pleasant, Wabash, Indiana, USA to parents Henry Glen Groninger (1908-2000) and Geneva Lucille Burch (1908-2010). He had one sister, Gloria V Groninger Kays (1933-1999). He lived in Plainfield, Indiana, USA and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1946. Richard registered for the draft at 18 years old on March 23, 1946, in Indiana, USA. A few months later he enlisted on June 3, 1946, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Richard enlisted in the Regular Army, which includes officers, nurses, warrant officers, and enlisted men. He entered into an enlistment contract for the Panama Canal Department, which was a military department responsible for defending the Panama Canal Zone. He was married to Jayne Ellen Davis (1928-2011) and the couple had three sons together.
Richard "Dick" LeeRoy Groninger
Richard LeeRoy Groninger was born on November 19, 1925 in Rock Creek, Carroll, Indiana, USA to parents Levi Ward Groninger (1899-1965) and Lesta Mae Benefiel (1903-1945). He had a brother Gordon Ward Groninger (1922-2009) and they grew up in Monmouth, Warren, Illinois before moving to Flora, Carroll, Indiana, USA in the 1940's. Richard LeeRoy Groninger joined the US Navy on September 13, 1943, and served as a SHC (Senior Chief Ship's Serviceman) during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He was assigned to the USS Block Island CVE-21, which unfortunately was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-Boat on May 29, 1944, resulting in the loss of 6 officers and 146 enlisted men. However, Richard was among the survivors. During his two decades of service, Richard moved around frequently with the Navy. In 1948, he was stationed at a Navy Base in California, USA, and in 1952, he lived in Denver for a year while attending a Navy school. After completing his schooling, he moved back to California. In 1959, he was assigned to the USS Ticonderoga CVA-14, and in 1962, he served with the USS Midway CV-41. The following year, in 1963, Richard was transferred by the Navy to Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, USA.
Richard Groninger of El Cajon, San Diego County, California was born on October 7, 1907, and died at age 72 years old in May 1980.
