DEATH OF MR. MANNING.
Mr. Richard Manning, of the Royal Hotel, Bacchus Marsh,
died at 2.30 on the morning of the 6th inst., after being
confined to his bed for some weeks, suffering from an
affection of the spinal cord which caused paralysis.
The illness began with influenza about three months ago,
and steadily increased. Mr. Manning was a diligent business
man, who carried on business successfully as a publican for
about 36 years, chiefly at Melton, and always enjoyed the
confidence of the public in every respect. He was a member
of the Braybrook and Melton Councils for several years, and
could always have remained so, had he chosen. He met with
considerable losses of late years, but died wealthy, we believe.
A widow and several sons and daughters survive him.
The eldest daughter is married to Mr. J. L. Robertson, Shire
Secretary at Melton. Among other properties deceased owned
about 1000 acres and a hotel in Melton; the Royal Hotel and
several other township properties in Bacchus Marsh, also the
Bald Hill. He arrived in the colony as a boy of 12 in 1847, being
brought out by the late Mr. Griffiths, of Glenmore.
His mother and father died early in his life. Mr. Manning was
very careful as a young man, and made money by owning and
driving bullock teams to the goldfields. In 1862 he bought the
Raglan hotel at Melton from Mr. Daniel Ross, and in 1885 came
to Bacchus Marsh as a permanent resident.
He was a bold speculator for many years in various directions-
landed property chiefly, and the Manningtree road in the
Caulfield district was named after him.
