Steven lived in Iowa until he retired from 40 years of teaching high school biology in Cedar Rapids. He taught at Grant, Roosevelt and Jefferson High schools. He was born to a farming family near Janesville, Iowa. After graduating college, he found a job during the Great Depression in British Columbia raising honey bees. He continued this as a part time job in Iowa when he was teaching. By himself, he produced 10 tons of honey one year during the depression. He married Helen Pratt and they had 3 children, Janet, Cynthia and Burton. As a long time nature lover he was very active in birding, science clubs, rock collecting, and collecting animal specimens to show in his biology classes. After retiring from Jefferson, he moved to Boulder, Colorado and bought a motel with a number of cabins in Nederland. During the winter he lived in Boulder and avidly watched his daughter who followed in his footsteps as a high school biology teacher. He remained physically active and mentally active taking hikes in the mountains, and continued with science interests until shortly before his death at 94.
