When he enlisted in 1942, he said that he had 4 years of college, was a teacher in secondary school, and was a resident of Union, New Jersey. Walter then married Arlene Louise Althenn (1918 - 1994) in New Jersey in 1943. There is no record of them having had children. Walter was an Army veteran of World War II. In the 1966 yearbook of Hillside High School, Walter was the Principal.
