James Harvey Standley Jr. of lodi, san joaquin County, California us was born on August 28, 1924 in Lincoln, Nebraska United States to James Harvey Standley Sr. and Gertrude Dagmar Larson. He had siblings Gertrude (Standley) Richter, Shirley Mae (Standley) Brown, and Paul Standley. He married Marcia Kathleen Kirwan on August 7, 1957 at Saint Anne's Chapel Tasso Street, in Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, California and they later divorced in 1976. James Standley died at age 81 years old on February 14, 2006 in Lodi, San Joaquin County, and was buried in September 2016 at Golden Gate Bridge Golden Gate Bridge, in San Francisco, San Francisco County.

    Jim's father was born in Missouri. His mother was born in Bennet, NE to a Pioneer that helped open the West, and an emigrant of Denmark with his wife. His brother married his wife's sister and the four of them emigrated together to Nebraska to farm and raise families.
  • Early Life & Education

    Jim's education ended out of family necessity in 8th grade. After he married Marcia, Jim received his 12th grade Diploma in 1958 from Palo Alto High School. He continued his education briefly at Foothill Community College, in Los Altos CA.
  • Religious Beliefs

    Jim was raised Lutheran but did not practice, To marry Marcia, Jim too Catholic Instruction in 1957. Jim was spiritual but did not prefer to belong to a religion.
  • Military Service

    Jim enlisted in the Merchant Marines when he was 18 during WWII. He was deployed multiple times on tankers carrying fuel, and "saw the world". He was an "Oiler" and spent his days in the bowels of the ship, in the engine room, which was very dangerous when his ship would come under attack.
  • Professional Career

    Jim was a Machinist by trade, enabling him to repair and fabricate almost anything. He was a member of the Machinist Union, and the American Motorcycle Association (AMA) for years, with his wife Marcia. In the 1940's, Jim was a professional flat-track motorcycle racer and Palo Alto Motorcycle Club (PMC) in the 1940's and was racing professionally when he experienced a career-stopping injury to his left leg in a qualifying race.
  • Personal Life & Family

    Jim was on track to be a professional motorcycle racer in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1940's, He was a member of the AMA and local motorcycle club PMC, where he lived and met his wife who also rode a motorcycle while attending Stanford University in Palo Alto. Jim owned a Motorcycle Shop after his accident, with a James Carney in Redwood City. From there he helped sponsor other riders who were turning professional.
