Domitilla Apolonia (Aguilar) Kincaid
Domitilla died young not long after the birth of her sixth child, Laura. She died unexpectedly of “ galloping tuberculosis” in Los Angeles, CA. Her husband, E.O. Aka Elam Orson Kincaid was farming in San Joaquin County in Northern California at the time. The six children were removed from their hone to an orphanage in the city of Los Angeles. The youngest child, Laura, was adopted out. The remaining five children were collected by their mother’s parents, Gavino and Antonia Aguilar, along with their daughter’s body. They traveled one-way by horse and wagon. The children were introduced to the family ranch, where their mother had been raised, in Descanso CA in SE San Diego County on the Viejas Grade in the Cuyamaca Mountains. They were all immediately baptised Catholic like their grandparents. The children were raised on the ranch and two of them are buried in the Aguilar Family Cemetery, subsequently known as The Ellis Ranch Family Cemetery. It is now a registered landmark.

This photo was taken about 1902 in San Francisco CA where Mary lived with her father and mother. This portrait was saved, along with one of her parents, the morning of The Great Quake April 18, 1906. Two other portraits were also saved just before the family home was dynamited in an attempt to stop The Great Fire. The family also lost their South of Market bar, located at 4th and Brannan Streets.

Pierce "The Duke" Kirwan
Pierce Kirwan sat for this photo in San Francisco in approximately 1903. It is one of three family portraits saved after The Great Quake and after The Great Fire. There is also one of Mary Kirwan, his little daughter at about age 3 and his wife Catherine. Their son Nick had turned 3 just days before the Great Quake. He had no portrait. Neither did the youngest child, Edward, who was born about a year after The Great Quake, on May 20th 1907, in Southern California where the family relocated to recover.

My mom's side of the family is Swedish (and still lives in Sweden) and she instilled in me lots of Swedish heritage and traditions which has made me who I am today. My dad's side of the family is German and Irish and the most likely the side of the family I get all my freckles from. Family is so important, and welcome everyone to discover more about them, their history, and share about their loved ones who make up the history of who we are!

Taken about 1900 in SanFrancisco, CA - the portrait was taken from their home the morning of April 18, 1906 after the home survived The Great Quake. The home was then dynamited by SF Fire Department in a attempt to stop the Ham and Eggs Fire that devoured San Francisco. It is one of three portraits, which also included one of Mary Kirwan( age 6) and her father, Kitty’s husband, Pierce “ The Duke” Kirwan. The family owned and operated a successful bar in the South of Market District, at 4th and Brannan Streets.
