In 1916, in the year that Aaron Parnes was born, the Battle of Verdun was fought from February through December. It was the largest and longest battle of World War I, lasting 303 days. The original estimates were 714,231 casualties - 377,231 French and 337,000 German, an average of 70,000 casualties a month. Current estimates are even larger. The Battle of the Somme was also fought from July through September of the same year. Original estimates were 485,000 British and French casualties and 630,000 German casualties.

In 1936, at the age of 20 years old, Aaron was alive when on November 3rd, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was reelected to a second term. He ran against Republican Governor Alf Landon (Kansas), defeating Landon in the popular vote by 60.8% to 36.5%. Vermont and Maine were the only two states in which Landon won. John Nance Garner IV became the Vice-President in this election.

First Responders: Policemen & Policewomen
From traffic control to crowd control, police men and women have always been on the front lines protecting their communities. These photos, dating from the 1800's through the early 1900's, are of those who have sworn to serve and protect. In some ways, a lot has changed but the duties of these men and women have remained the same. Wouldn't it be amazing if New York City's traffic today were like the 1911 photo below?
