Abraham Thomas Swanton of Nunawading, VIC Australia was born on July 18, 1884 in Werribee, City of Wyndham County to Helena Jane (Beamish) Swanton and Samuel Swanton. Abraham Swanton had siblings George Beamish Swanton, John Swanton, Henry Swanton, Ann Swanton Green, Freda Jane Swanton, Thomas Swanton, Margaret Swanton, William Swanton, and Adelaide Victoria Swanton. He married Mary Grey (Forster) Swanton in 1912. They had children Jean Swanton, Rhoda Irene Swanton, Annie Swanton, and Elsie Swanton. He would also marry Minnie Maude Jessie Morton in 1938. Abraham Swanton died at age 67 years old in April 1952 in Nunawading.

In 1884, in the year that Abraham Thomas Swanton was born, on December 6th, the Washington Monument was completed. Building began in 1848 but was stopped because of lack of funds and also due to the Civil War. It would be dedicated in 1885. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest structure in the world.

In 1907, he was 23 years old when the Monongah coal mining disaster occurred on December 6th, happening at the Fairmont Coal Company’s No. 6 and No. 8 mines.. Over 361 miners were killed. Because there was no breathing apparatus at the time to help rescuers, recovery efforts were greatly hampered. It is considered the worst mining disaster in American history and led to government oversight in mining practices.
