  • Professional Career

He served in WWI as an officer. He hated being in the war and thought the fighting was pointless and did not resolve a thing. Despite his record of service he was later put in a concentration camp by the Nazis. It was either Bergen-belzen or Buchenwald. Sadly, I can't recall which. He was able to survive till the camp was freed by the Allies.

  • Obituary

Abraham Uhrmacher loved his wife but sadly she died many years before he did. I believe they had three daughters together. One of the daughters lived in the same building in Washington Heights he resided in until his death. I met Abraham in the last two years of his long life (He lived to be in his mid 90s). He made a great impression on me and taught me much about Jewish holidays, prayers, WWI and the Holocaust. He had a good sense of humor and was a definite survivor. He had managed, via intelligence/cunning, to survive the horrors of both WWI and the Holocaust. He was born Hasidic to a strict orthodox family. While he remained a spiritual person he was tolerant of people with differing beliefs and perspectives. He made his own menorah which was beautiful. I hope one of his decedents now treasures it. He was a gentleman. I was in my early 20s when I met him. I used to tell my Jewish boyfriend at the time that if Mr. Uhrmacher were 70 younger and a foot taller he would have some real competition. When I later married and had my first child I hoped to name my son Abram in memory of Mr. Uhrmacher. My husband was against the idea. Instead I named my son Isaac (Abraham's son whose name means laughter in Hebrew). Mr. Uhrmacher was full of laughter. As long as I live and am of sound mind I will fondly remember Mr. Uhrmacher. He was a man who faced hate armed with a love for humanity. Warmly, Megan Elizabeth Rogers Clinical Psychologist Owatonna, MN.
