President James Madison and his wife, Dolley, couldn't return to the White House when the British were driven out. It wasn't until 1817 that the White House became habitable again.

Jefferson died a few hours before Adams. Adams, unaware of Jefferson's death - who was both a friend and a rival - said as he was dying ""Thomas Jefferson survives."
