Graham, Aileen W., 75, retired Director of Library Media Services for Manhattan School District 383, died Friday, October 10, 2003 in Wichita. Born Aileen Eloise Wheeldon January 3, 1928 on a farm in Brownville, Neb., Mrs. Graham developed a passion for reading at age three that defined the course of her life. Devouring school textbooks and skipping two primary school grades, Mrs. Graham graduated from high school at age 16 and received an education degree from Peru State Teachers’ College in Peru, Neb. at age 20. A week after graduation she married her longtime study partner and fellow aspiring teacher, Ralf Graham. From 1948 to 1956 Mrs. Graham taught music, English, business, speech and drama at Nebraska schools, first in Brock and later in Auburn. Following her childhood love of reading, she spent her summers earning a Masters in Library Science degree from the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1954. While taking a 10-year sabbatical to raise her two daughters, Mrs. Graham moved with her family to Manhattan in 1961. She returned to teaching in 1967 as Library Media Specialist for what was then Manhattan Junior High School. Eight years later she earned a Masters in School Administration degree from Kansas State University and became Director of Library Media Services for Manhattan/Ogden Unified School District 383. In 1992, after 17 years with Mrs. Graham as Director, USD 383’s library program won the American Association of School Librarians’ National School Library Media Program of the Year award. Mrs. Graham was also an active leader in service and professional associations, including Eastern Star, Girl Scouts, Delta Kappa Gamma, the American Library Association and the Kansas Association of School Librarians, for which she served as president. For a decade she also chaired the selection committee for the statewide William Allen White Children’s Book Award. She continued to serve on the committee for many more years and was still an active member when she died. After her retirement in 1992, Mrs. Graham and her late husband moved to Wichita, to be near daughter Ellen Moore’s growing family. There Mrs. Graham became an enthusiastic church volunteer, which included continuing her life’s mission for children’s literacy by supporting her church library and becoming a “story lady” for preschoolers. Mrs. Graham was preceded in death by her husband, parents and three infant brothers. Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law Ellen and Dennis Moore of Wichita, and Dawn Graham and John Newcomer of Arlington Heights, Ill; and grandchildren Matthew, Alosha and Masha Moore of Wichita. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at West Heights United Methodist Church in Wichita, with Rev. John Martin officiating. A memorial fund has been established at West Heights United Methodist Church, 745 N. Westlink, Wichita, Kansas, 67212.
