He had two brothers, William Stringfellow (born 1919) and Lonnie Stringfellow Jr. (1920 - 1985). A veteran of World War II, Alan Stringfellow enlisted in the Navy on October 19, 1942 and was discharged on December 8, 1945. Alan "A.B." Stringfellow married Bette C. Cowan (1923 - 2006) on March 28, 1942 in Dallas, Texas and they had children Carole (1947 - 2011) and Mark (1952 - 2006).

In 1922, in the year that Alan B Stringfellow was born, on James Joyce's 40th birthday, his book Ulysses was published in France. The book covers the experiences of an Irishman in Dublin on an ordinary day, 16 June 1904. Now considered a classic, it was controversial at the time. Due to some sexual content, the book was banned in the U.S. during the 1920's and the U.S. Post Office destroyed 500 copies of the novel.
