Albert Ernest Mills of Cheltenham Australia was born in 1886 in Cheltenham, VIC to Eliza Noy Mills and John Mills. Albert Mills had a brother Thomas Henry Mills. He married Florence Isabel Adair in 1941. He also married Hilda Mary (Ennor) Mills, and they had children Evelyn Millicent Keast, John Mills, and Jean Elena Mills. Albert Mills died at age 54 years old on June 24, 1941 in Melbourne.

A gift from France, the base for the statue had been built using donations from the American public. For these two reasons, the Nobel Prize committee chose him for the Peace Prize.
