  • Introduction

    Albert signed up in 1914 and fought until just seven weeks before the end of the war. Albert was injured in 1915 and was told he could return home to Britain but refused because he said he wouldn't be able to look his mates in the eye when they eventually came home, once the war was over, if he left them to fight without him. He died on September 18th 1918, aged 29 years old.

Did you know?
In 1889, in the year that Albert Jowett was born, on March 31st, the Eiffel Tower was inaugurated. Because the elevators were not yet in operation, officials had to climb to the top of the tower - it took an hour. On May 15th, the Tower opened to the public - still without working elevators - but around 30,000 visitors still made the climb. The elevators went into operation on the 26th. The Tower wasn't considered aesthetically pleasing at the time but is now one of the most iconic structures in the world.
