    The following obituary appeared in the Bonner Springs-Edwardsville Chieftain (Bonner Springs, Kansas), May 24, 2001: "Funeral services for Albert Ray Watterson, Sr., 71, Olathe, were Tuesday, May 22, at Maple Hill Funeral Home. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery. Mr. Watterson died Friday, May 18, at Olathe Medical Center. He was born Dec. 4, 1929, in Tulsa, Okla., and had lived in the Kansas City area most of his life. He was a heavy equipment operator for 45 years for Local No. 101, working for Bowen Construction. He retired in 1990. He was a past governor for the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 1999 and a member of the Merriam Eagles Lodge. His first wife, Elmira Ellen Gulley Watterson; a son, Danny Watterson; a daughter, Omega Sue Reynolds; and a stepdaughter, Billie Jo Hensley, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Watterson of the home; six sons, Albert Ray Watterson, Jr., Frank Watterson and John Watterson, all of Olathe, Jesse Watterson of Galiton, Mo., and Gary Watterson and Shannon Watterson, both of Kansas City, Kan.; two daughters, Kathy Wiser of Edwardsville and Mary Watterson of Kansas City, Kan.; a stepson, Michael Hart of Overland Park; three stepdaughters, Vicki Lyman, Sandy Hart and Toni Hosseinpour, all of Kansas City, Kan.; and two sisters, Marie Boyer of Olathe and Marion Brown of Nursery, Texas." In 1929, in the year that Albert Ray Watterson Sr was born, on March 4th, Herbert Hoover became the 31st President of the United States. Early in his presidency, the October stock market crash - "Black Tuesday" - occurred, which lead to the Great Depression. None of his economic policies were able to make a dent in the Depression. This lead to one term and the election of Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt winning the 1933 election in a landslide.

In 1933, he was merely 4 years old when the day after being inaugurated, the new President, Franklin Roosevelt, declared a four-day bank holiday to stop people from withdrawing their money from shaky banks (the bank run). Within 5 days of his administration, the Emergency Banking Act was passed - reorganizing banks and closing insolvent ones. In his first 100 days, he asked Congress to repeal Prohibition (which they did), signed the Tennessee Valley Authority Act, signed legislation that paid commodity farmers to leave their fields fallow, thus ending surpluses and boosting prices, signed a bill that gave workers the right to unionize and bargain collectively for higher wages and better working conditions as well as suspending some antitrust laws and establishing a federally funded Public Works Administration, and won passage of 12 other major laws that helped the economy.
