His mother Gertrude was born on June 5, 1898 in Connecticut and grew up in Stamford Ward 2, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA. She later resided in Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA. Gertrude married John on February 5, 1925 and the couple resided in Stamford. She passed away there on July 11, 1997. His father John was born around 1899 in Czechoslovakia and immigrated to the US before 1916. He lived in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA and worked as a grocery store driver.
