He was married to Viola Helen Puskas, and had a child Kathleen Viola (Vanche). Alex Vanche died at age 78 years old on May 7, 2001 at Elyria Memorial Hospital Regional Medical Center in Elyria, and was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.

    He was born May 10, 1923, in Geneva. He had been a longtime Lorain resident, before moving to Elyria. He had also lived in Alabama, following his retirement, and continued to spend winters there. Vanche was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during World War II in the Pacific. He was employed by USS/Kobe Steel, Lorain, retiring in 1976, after 31 years of service. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1079, Elyria. He enjoyed ballroom dancing, gardening and working on cars. Survivors include daughters Kathleen Aulisio, Alicia Rosenthal and Beth Simboli, all of Elyria, Peggy Lamoraux of Oberlin; son, Alex “Chip” Vanche of Fairhope, Ala.; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; brother, Andrew Vanche of Avon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Anna (nee Popp) Vanche; sisters Florence Onegia, Sylvia Emerick, Elizabeth and Theresa Vanche; brothers Theodore and George Vanche. Friends may call Wednesday 7 to 9 p.m. at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. Mass will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary Church, 320 Middle Ave., Elyria. The Rev. Gary J. Malin, associate pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, with military honors by Elyria Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1079.
