Alex Rakay of Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan was born on January 26, 1882 to Alexander Rakay and Susan Farkus. He had siblings Louis S Rakay, Julia Kollath, Alex Rakay, Joseph Rakay, Elizabeth Burton, Steven Rakay, James Rakay, Margaret Kondor, and Mary Toth. He married nellie gall, and had a child deloris ellis. Alex Rakay died at age 85 years old in December 1967.

In 1882, in the year that Alex Rakay was born, on January 5th, writer and lawyer Charles J. Guiteau was found guilty of the assassination of President Garfield. Guiteau was "offended" because his job applications had been rejected by Garfield's government. He was sentenced to death -although his lawyer plead insanity - and hanged five months later, on June 30th.

In 1922, at the age of 40 years old, Alex was alive when on James Joyce's 40th birthday, his book Ulysses was published in France. The book covers the experiences of an Irishman in Dublin on an ordinary day, 16 June 1904. Now considered a classic, it was controversial at the time. Due to some sexual content, the book was banned in the U.S. during the 1920's and the U.S. Post Office destroyed 500 copies of the novel.
