Alex Zdinak was born to Illés Zsdinyak (1859 - 1891) and Maria "Mary" Pellior of Pillyar (1847 - 1935). His mother was born in Slovakia, as was his father. Alex had three siblings: two brothers, Simeon and Michael Zdinak, and one sister, Anna Zsdinyak. Alex Zsdinyak married Mary Horkulic on October 11, 1913 in Toronto, Ohio. They had ten children: five daughters, including Mary, Anne, Magdalene, Veronica, and one more; and five sons, John, Michael, George, Peter, and one more.
