He was married to Nancy Walker Ellis on October 26, 1946 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut, and they were together until Alexander's death on December 29, 1989 in Cambridge, Middlesex County. He had children Nancy Walker Black, Alexander Benjamin Ellis III, John Prescott Ellis, and Josiah Wear Ellis. Alexander Ellis was buried at Cremated.
