He had siblings Allen Stirling Kinnaird, Isabella Kinnaird, Agnes Kinnaird, Sarah Stirling (Kinnaird) Fry, David Kinnaird, Isabella (Kinnaird) Green, Robert Kinnaird, and Agnes Jane (Kinnaird) Lowry. Alexander Kinnaird died at age 2 years old in 1865.

In 1863, in the year that Alexander John Kinnaird was born, on January 1st, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation made the abolition of slavery in the Confederate states an official war goal. It also immediately freed 50,000 slaves, with the rest freed as Union armies advanced into Confederate states. The Proclamation wasn't a Congressional law - it was an Executive Order.

In 1865, in the year of Alexander John Kinnaird's passing, on March 4th, President Abraham Lincoln was sworn in for a second term. A little over a month later, he would be assassinated by a Confederate sympathizer - 4 days after the surrender of Lee at Appomattox, which had effectively ended the Civil War.
