In 1813, in the year that Alexander Mcdonald was born, on March 29th, in the Mexican War of Independence, the Battle of Rosillo Creek took place. The Republican Army of the North defeated the Spanish Royalist Army in present-day Bexar County, Texas. On April 1st, the Royalists surrendered to the Republican Army. On April 6th, the Republican Army issued a draft declaration of independence.

In 1823, Alexander was just 10 years old when President James Monroe first introduced the Monroe Doctrine in his State of the Union address. He didn't deliver the speech personally - it was written and delivered to Congress. The Doctrine said that any European attempts to re colonize the Americas would be considered a hostile act towards the United States. It also stated that the US wouldn't interfere with any European colonies and wouldn't interfere with any European affairs.
