On his February 1942 World War II draft card, Alexandre described himself as being five feet six 1/2 inches tall and as weighing 155 pounds. He had brown eyes, brown hair, and a "dark" complexion. Alexandre married Thelma, born in 1919, and they had three sons: Van (1947 - 1967), Stephen and George.

Containing several essays on the African-American experience in America, much of the book was based on Du Bois' own life. The book was one of the very early works in the science of sociology.
