Alfonso, Al, Big Al, Coach, Mr. Speckled Trout Martello died at age 76 years old on May 28, 1993 at VA Hospital 400 Veterans Ave, in Biloxi, Harrison County, and was buried on May 30, 1993 at VFW Section of Floral Hills Cemetery on 28th Street, Long Beach, Mississippi in Long Beach.

    Alfonso was born and raised the first 17 years of His life in New York City. In 1933 Alfonso joined The Civilian Conservation Corps a voluntary public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men ages 18–25 and eventually expanded to ages 17–28. Alfonso served in the (CCC's) until 1939 when He joined The U.S. Army.

    Alfonso did not finish high school. His father died when he was about eleven years old and he had to go to work to help his mother feed his brothers and sisters. Eventually there would be ten sons and three daughters for his mother.

  • Military Service

    In 1933 at the age of 17, Alfonso was in the CCC's, (Civilian Conservation Corps) which gave young men job's planting trees and other work for the US government, so that they could send money home to their families in the Great Depression of 1929-1939. Alfonso joined the US Army in 1939 and after basic training was sent to Schofield Barracks Hawaii, and was on Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. Alfonso was shot twice that day, (This would be His first of three Purple Heart's). After a brief recovery in the military hospital in Hawaii, he was transferred to other US Army units and Fought Battles in Burma, Manilla Philippines, Guadalcanal, and Guam. Over His almost 6 years of US Army service, Alfonso would receive 2 Sliver Stars for bravery under fire and saving men in his unit. Alfonso also received 2 Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge, and He would receive 7 campaign badges. Alfonso was promoted to Staff Sergeant, with recommendations to become a Officer, but his lack of a formal education kept him from becoming an officer in the U.S. Army. Finally Alfonso was shot for the third time, this time ending his Military career, and being sent to A Veterans Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi.
  • Professional Career

    After Alfonso was released from the VA Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, he began a career as a Orderly at the Jackson, Mississippi Veterans Administration. He would eventually transfer to the Engineering department at the VA in Biloxi, Mississippi, and worked there until 1962. In 1962, He would transfer to the Naval Construction Battalion (Seabee Base) in Gulfport, Mississippi until his medical retirement in 1965. After Alfonso retired from the U.S. Government Civil Service, he started working as a Longshoreman at the Port in Gulfport, Mississippi, where he worked until 1979 when His health forced him to take a medical retirement from the Longshoremans union.
  • Personal Life & Family

    Alfonso was instrumental in helping to create little league baseball in the late 1940's in Biloxi and Gulfport, Mississippi. He coached many years, and pass the bat to younger coaches in the 1960's. Alfonso was also a Boy Scout Master with the Pine Burr area of South, Mississippi, where he was the Scout Master of Troop # 300 in Long Beach, Mississippi. Alfonso also belong to The Knight's of Columbus, and was a Life Member of The DAV, The VFW, and the American Legion. Alfonso Favorite past times were Fishing, crabbing, and Hunting. He loved being on his boat fishing the barrier islands in the Gulf Of Mexico, South of Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama. He fished for enjoyment and to also feed his family, BUT MOSTLY for Fun. He was also a good water skier, Swimmer, and scuba diver. Alfonso loved to Cook, and was famous among family members and neighbors for His Seafood Gumbo, Spaghetti, and Pasta Fazzoli. He was a great gardener, and grew delicious tomatoes, hot and bell peppers, squash, figs, watermelons, eggplants, and okra, most in which he put into his famous Gumbo. He made his own homemade pork and deer sausage. His favorite sports teams were The New York Yankees, The Atlanta Braves, and The New Orleans Saints. Alfonso live life to the fullest the best he could, and Loved His Family and in-laws above all else except God, whom he put first in his life above everything earthly. He was a deacon at St. Thomas Church in Long Beach, Mississippi. He is missed by those whose lives that he touched.

In 1921, he was only 5 years old when on November 11th, the first burial was held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. The body of an unknown soldier - selected by Army Sgt. Edward F. Younger who was highly decorated for valor and received the Distinguished Service Cross in "The Great War" - was brought back from France (World War 1) and placed in the newly completed tomb. President Warren G. Harding officiated at the interment ceremonies.
