Alford Walser was born in 1825 in Illinois United States to George Walser and Rachel (McKinney) Walser, and has siblings David Walser, Sarah Sally Walser, Eliza Walser, Henry G Walser, Charles Daniel Walser, and Frederick Walser. He married Mary Ann (Gilkinson) Walser in 1847. They had a child Sarah Elizabeth (Walser) Morgan. He married Lucinda A. (Fuller) Walser in 1881. He would also marry Harriet (Armstrong) Walser.

In 1825, in the year that Alford Walser was born, on August 18th, the Panic of 1825 began in London and spread to Europe, Latin America, and the United States. It affected Great Britain most strongly, leading to the closing of six banks in London and 60 banks in the country. Scottish adventurer - and trickster - Gregor MacGregor had invented a fictional Latin American country called Poyais and persuaded others to invest in the "country". The loss of funds on the part of banks and others began the panic.

In 1885, on June 17th, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor. Two hundred thousand people and hundreds of boats greeted the statue. It had to be assembled but that had to wait until the pedestal was completed the following April.
