    Uncle Alley married Aunt Lee when I was a child. I have many fond memories of visiting Hasbrouck Heights and playing in the back yard with my cousins. They had a big garden. Always had nice Christmas parties.

    Uncle Alley always reminded us we were from Gussing, Austria. Three brothers came over together to NYC. They brought the sister over a few years later. Uncle Alley had 10 brothers and 2 sisters. The parents were Mary and Joseph. Joseph was one of the 3 brothers who immigrated. The family has prospered. We do not know where all the Maikisch are or which brother they are from. We do know this is the only name in the United States and they are all from one of the three brothers. We can not find the sister or her married name. Someone has to look up marriage records in NYC.

In 1927, in the year that Alfred C Maikisch was born, the first "talkie" (a movie with music, songs, and talking), The Jazz Singer, was released. Al Jolson starred as a cantor's son who instead of following in his father's footsteps as expected, becomes a singer of popular songs. Banished by his father, they reconcile on his father's deathbed. It was a tear-jerker and audiences went wild - especially when they heard the songs. Thus begun the demise of silent films and the rise of "talkies".
