He married Mabel Charlotte (Whitfield) Buckland in 1890, and had children Elsie Minnie Buckland, Mabel Cassandra Buckland, Lillian Charlotte Buckland, Alfred John Buckland, Thomas Albert Leslie Buckland, and Stanley William Buckland. Alfred Buckland died at age 69 years old on December 12, 1938 in Melbourne.

The Fourteenth Amendment guaranteed African Americans full citizenship and equal protection under the law. It also gave all persons in the United States due process of law. The former Confederate states hotly contested the amendment but were forced to go along so that they could regain representation in Congress
