In 1858, in the year that Alfred Lester was born, on January 25th, the "Wedding March" - composed by Felix Mendelssohn - became a popular wedding recessional after being played at the marriage of Queen Victoria's daughter Victoria - eldest child of Victoria and Albert and Princess Royal. Princess Victoria was married to Prince Friedrich of Prussia in St James's Palace, London and as with all things royal in Victorian England, everyone wanted it played at their wedding.

In 1863, he was merely 5 years old when on January 1st, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation made the abolition of slavery in the Confederate states an official war goal. It also immediately freed 50,000 slaves, with the rest freed as Union armies advanced into Confederate states. The Proclamation wasn't a Congressional law - it was an Executive Order.

In 1907, Alfred was 49 years old when the Monongah coal mining disaster occurred on December 6th, happening at the Fairmont Coal Company’s No. 6 and No. 8 mines.. Over 361 miners were killed. Because there was no breathing apparatus at the time to help rescuers, recovery efforts were greatly hampered. It is considered the worst mining disaster in American history and led to government oversight in mining practices.

In 1912, when he was 54 years old, New Mexico became the 47th state of the Union in January. Previously a province of Mexico, then a territory of the United States and mostly populated by Native Americans and Mexicans, once it became a U.S. territory it was increasingly colonized by European-American settlers. Its population was over 327,000 when it became a state.

In 1949, in the year of Alfred Lester's passing, on January 25th, the first Emmy Awards (for television) were handed out in Los Angeles. Shirley Dinsdale won for the Most Outstanding Television Personality and Pantomime Quiz Time earned an Emmy for the Most Popular Television Program.
