He had siblings Eliza Julian, William, Mary who did not survive, another Mary, John, Matilda, Edwin, Emma, Richard, and Stephen Vivian Ripper. They lived in St Allen, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. Alfred came to South Australia with his parents in 1849 on the ship "Orator." They arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia, Australia on October 2, 1849. On December 9, 1867 he married Eliza Jane Worrell (1851-1887) at Eliza's parents home in Kyneton, Victoria, Australia. The couple lived in Tylden, Victoria, Australia and had many children together; Ada (1869-1964), Edith (1870-1926), Maud (1872-1943), Amos Worrell (1873-1966), Arthur (1874-1874), Reuben Felix (1876-1905), Rowland (1878-1964), Hector Raymond (1879-1951), Bernice (1880-1948), Clement Arthur (1882-1960), Elise (1884-1978), Hilda (1886-1975), and Alicia Jane Ripper (1887-1969).
