In 1864, in the year that Alfred Schlienger was born, on February 25th, the first prisoners arrived at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Andersonville became notorious for the conditions that Union prisoners endured. 500 prisoners had left from Richmond, Virginia the week before - eventually 13,000 prisoners would die at the prison.

In 1879, he was just 15 years old when on October 22nd, Thomas Edison tested the first practical electric light bulb. Lasting 13½ hours before burning out, it used a "a carbon filament or strip coiled and connected to platina contact wires". He applied for a patent on November 4th, receiving the patent in January 1880.
