  • Introduction

    The Dandenong Journal, October 1939. ST. MATTHEW'S CHURCH, MULGRAVE CELEBRATEs 70th ANNIVERSARY. ....During the impressive service, a communion table was dedicated to the memory of the late Mr. A. W. Armstrong and his parents, who were strong adherents of the church from its very inception. There were over 160 people present, parliamentarians, councilors, and representatives of pioneer families of the Mulgrave area. Archdeacon Hewitt, of St. Andrew's, Brighton, was the special preacher, the Rev. C.H. Barnes, who was stipendiary reader 50 years ago. The Spring Vale Choir, assisted by Mr and Mrs T. MacFarlane. MEMORIAL TO ARMSTRONG FAMILY. Presented to the church by the children of the late Mr. Alfred Armstrong, in memory of their father, mother, grandfather and of their late sister, Wilhelmina, a beautiful Mountain Ash Credence Table, a brass vase and two crystal cruets. James Armstrong, Alfred's father was born in the north of Ireland, and originally resided at Prahran, on the site where the Prahran Town Hall now stands. He came to Mulgrave in 1849 and took up 160 acres of land, and took up wood carting and general contracting. He was present on the opening day of the church in 1869, but died four years later. The stone for the church was quarried from Wolsenton Holmes, at Wheeler's Hill, and carted by the bullock team of Mr. Chaundry. Alfred married Maria Exner and lived in Wellington road, near his father's old homestead with his six sons and five daughters.
