Alice Beatrice (Gorrum) Verrall's History: 1881 - 1963

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Alice Beatrice Gorrum was born in Lewisham, London, England to George and Fanny (Hards) Gorrum on 13 May 1881. She and her family emigrated to Canada when she was about 5 or 6 years of age, and eventually settled in British Columbia when she was about 10. On 26 Nov 1901, she married Fred Steven Verrall in Whatcom County, Washington, USA. Fred and Alice had three children: George Stephen Verrall (1902-1972), Mildred Violet Verrall (1904-2004), and Eveline Verrall (1909-1994). According to Mildred and verified by available records, Fred left the family sometime in 1910, and Alice was not able to support three young children on her own. She arranged for an older, childless couple, Carrie and Wyman Kirby of Sedro Woolley, Washington, to adopt Eveline; they changed her name to Carol Kirby. Alice had no further contact with her daughter but kept track of her from a distance over the years, and many years after Alice's death, Mildred got in touch with Carol. They became and remained close for the rest of their lives. In researching Alice, I discovered that her Vancouver descendants commemorated her passing in the local newspaper for several years after her death. She is my biological great grandmother; what must have been an incredibly painful and difficult decision set my grandmother's life on a completely different trajectory, and without it, neither my mother, uncle, aunt, sisters nor cousins or their children would be here. I am immensely curious about her and would dearly love to find out more about her.
