Alice Emma (Voigt) Sharples of Vermont, VIC Australia was born on March 24, 1892 in Mitcham, Whitehorse City County to William Henry Voigt and Emma Annie Gerlach. She had siblings Amy Mabel Voigt, Dorothy May Voigt Laver, George Henry Voigt, Mildred Violet Voigt, Emily Matilda Voigt, and Edward Allan Voigt. She married Robert Holgate Sharples in 1914, and had children Edna Elizabeth Sharples, Robert Holgate Sharples, Elsie Sharples, and Evelyn Sharples. Alice Sharples died at age 30 years old on April 14, 1922 in Vermont.

In 1892, in the year that Alice Emma (Voigt) Sharples was born, on October 12th, the "Pledge of Allegiance" was first recited in unison by students in U.S. public schools. Composed the previous August by Francis Bellamy, it was to be recited in 15 seconds and originally read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "Under God" was added in the 1950's.

In 1907, by the time she was just 15 years old, the showman Florenz Ziegfeld introduced his Ziegfeld Follies. Ziegfeld was inspired by the Folies Bergère of Paris and the show was a step up from the then current vaudeville shows. The top entertainers of the time played in the Follies but the stars were the Ziegfeld girls - beautiful chorus girls in elaborate costumes. For almost a quarter of a century, the Ziegfeld follies were the toast of Broadway.
