    July 22, 2003 Alice Mae Woods, 68, of County Route 21, Hannibal, died Tuesday at St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse. Born in Volney, she had resided in Hannibal since 1989 and previously in Oswego. She retired as a nurse's aide at Oswego Hospital after 18 years and had worked at Comstock Foods in Red Creek over 10 years. She was the daughter of Ward and Harriet Hall. She was predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Ward Hall Jr. Survivors: her husband of 47 years, Donald Woods of Hannibal; a daughter, Cindy Woods of Conyers, Georgia; a son, Don Woods Jr. of Hannibal; five sisters, Esther Thompson of Oswego, Ruth Lumm of Sterling, Nora Hunter of Baldwinsville, Wilma Shell of Richland, North Carolina, and Rebecca Pickrell of Fulton; three brothers, Robert Hal! of Newark Valley, William and Mark Hall, both of Fulton; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Foster Funeral Home, Hannibal. Burial at Fairdale Rural Cemetery, Hannibal. Calling hours 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Foster Funeral Home, 837 Cayuga Street, Hannibal. Contributions: American Diabetes Association, PO Box 2680.

In 1935, in the year that Alice Mae Woods was born, on September 8th, Louisiana Senator Huey Long was shot by Dr. Carl Weiss. Weiss was shot and killed immediately by Long's bodyguards - Long died two days later from his injuries. Long had received many death threats previously, as well as threats against his family. He was a powerful and controversial figure in Louisiana politics (and probably gained power through multiple criminal acts). His opponents became frustrated with their attempts to oust him and Dr. Weiss was the son-in-law of one of those opponents. His funeral was attended by 200,000 mourners.
