Allen Walter Anscombe of Balwyn, City of Boroondara County, VIC Australia was born in 1902 in Melbourne to Mary Ann (Hill) Anscombe and Samuel Ernest Anscombe. He had siblings Mary Ellen (Anscombe) Copp, Louisa Clara Anscombe, William Samuel Frank Anscombe, Agnes Rose Elizabeth Anscombe, and Ernest Arthur Anscombe. Allen Anscombe married Isobel Margaret Gellard in 1925, and died at age 77 years old in 1979 in Balwyn.

In 1902, in the year that Allen Walter Anscombe was born, the world famous Italian tenor, Enrico Caruso, made the first gramophone recording by a popular singer. Accompanied by only a piano, his voice recordings became a big seller and did much to popularize the new-fangled gramophone. He had to sing into a metal "horn" that relayed his voice to a metal disc. And the songs had to be under 4 and a half minutes!

In 1928, when he was 26 years old, aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August. In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.
