    Allen Russell Wanek was born to John Albert Wanek (1896 - 1979) and Hilda Elizabeth Schwertel (1898 - 1993). Both of his parents had been born in Wisconsin. He had two brothers and a sister, one of whom was Owen Julius Wanek (1922 - 2015). He also had siblings Donald and Iona Wanek. Allen R Wanek married Laurel A Gillund on June 16, 1973 in Olmsted County, Minnesota. They had one son, Matthew. He served for nine years in the United States Air Force as a captain.

In 1938, in the year that Allen Wanek was born, on June 25th (a Saturday) the Fair Labor Standards Act was signed into law by President Roosevelt (along with 120 other bills). The Act banned oppressive child labor, set the minimum hourly wage at 25 cents, and established the maximum workweek at 44 hours. It faced a lot of opposition and in fighting for it, Roosevelt said "Do not let any calamity-howling executive with an income of $1,000 a day, ...tell you...that a wage of $11 a week is going to have a disastrous effect on all American industry."
