Auntie Ahm was born in Oregon. Her father, Halvor Nordskog, was born in Morgedal, Telemark, Norway. He emigrated to the United States as a young man and lived in Iowa and Wisconsin, where he changed his name to Halvor Halvorson. He met his wife, Alma's mother, in Wisconsin. Sine Helene Hoyeson was born in Blair, Wisconsin. She changed her name to Helen Olson while living there. They came to Oregon before 1900. She was a mid-wife in Wisconsin and Oregon. Halvor was a farmer and a gifted carpenter in Wisconsin and Oregon, where he built many churches and other buildings. Alma grew up in Silverton and became a teacher. She taught for many years at Alameda Grade School in Portland. She was fluent in Spanish and Norwegian. Alma would travel back to Norway to visit relatives and was one of the stronger connections to those family members in Oslo and Morgedal, Norway. She never married and spent a lot of her time traveling and with her nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. She taught them Norwegian and how to make lefse, krumkakke and other Norwegian dishes. She would often have them stay over at her apartment and she would give them activities, such as reading newspaper articles and then acting them out or discussing them. She suffered from rheumatoid arthritis since a young woman but it never slowed her down. She was known and loved by family and friends and will never be forgotten.
