  • Introduction

    Alma Scatliffe was born on the island of Tortola British, VI. Alma emigrated to St. Thomas, VI and had a son at 19 named Lionel Alexander Thomas, and then another son 12 years later named Leroy Monsanto. I am Leroy's daughter. Alma emigrated again at the age of 36 to Harlem, New York, with her youngest son Leroy, who was five years old at the time. Alma started working at a sugar factory called Jack Frost Sugar. She later was trained to be a nurses assistant when the sugar plant closed. Alma Scatliffe had the following grandchildren: Audrey Monsanto, Denise Monsanto, Vanessa Monsanto, Mark Monsanto, Sabrina Monsanto, and Michael Garcia. Alma Scatliffe was a very proud, dignified woman, who always carried herself with respect and pride. Alma could never be heard raising her voice. Alma Scatliffe, after moving from Harlem to the Bronx, loved to dance to Calypso music and loved Mighty Sparrow. Alma kept her Caribbean traditions and loved to cook Fish and Fungi, Johnny cake and other delicacies for her grandchildren. Alma Scatliffe is sorely loved and missed.
