Anna Jarvis had championed a Mother's Day for years but Congress had joked a few years earlier that then they would have to proclaim a "Mother-in-law's Day" as well. The President who championed a woman's right to vote also created a day in their honor.

In 1928, by the time he was merely 14 years old, aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.

In 1955, at the age of 41 years old, Alphonse was alive when in January, President Eisenhower sent direct aid to South Vietnam. In February, U.S. advisors were sent to train troops.

In 1986, when he was 72 years old, on September 8th, the Oprah Winfrey Show went into national syndication. A popular talk show, it was number 1 in the ratings since its debut. The last show aired on May 25, 2011.
