Novemver of 81 my dad and I drove out to Virginia to see his Navy 61 ship was restored and put in harbor. My brother in law David Krueger was Master Chief in the Navy working in the Pentagon and his wife my sister Bobbi Jean took us on base and we was able to get rite up and personal in the ship yard and also go into the 3rd floor of the pentagon... Places that civiliS and do NOT go. it was a trip of a life time. My papa saun Died in march says 16th on his stone the obituary says the 26th. of March 1982. He had just retired not even a year before at Maytag in Newton lived in Knoxville. Born in Busy buried in Hamilton. His 6th Gradpa C Vandersluis lived in Amsterdam and one of his chillldred and 5 kids moved to the USA and settled in the NW most Iowa. I still have relatives in Amsterdam that remember the grandpa C Vandersluis. The drive out there and back was as I can imagine now being an adult; ADventure of a life time what a way for my dad to go out. about 2019 i had the oporttunity to go int the grout Museum in Waterloo Iowa and was able to find my dad listed and his ship... I am sure the lung cancer he got was from the job he had on the ship. he was in the smallest group THE OIL gang the fed the ship... ASBESTOUS.
